David Is a
Changed Man
Backslidding drags down
But Christ lifts up
Text Heb 13:6 "So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." 1 Sam 30:24 "For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike."

The first step down hill When David leaves to go into hiding he goes to Ahimelech, the priest, for help and look at 1 Sam 21.1 1 Sam 21:1 "Then came David to Nob to Ahimelech the priest: and Ahimelech was afraid at the meeting of David, and said unto him, Why art thou alone, and no man with thee?" 1 Sam 21:2 "And David said unto Ahimelech the priest, The king hath commanded me a business…" "… and hath said unto me, Let no man know any thing of the business whereabout I send thee, and what I have commanded thee: and I have appointed my servants to such and such a place." Skip down to verse 8 1 Sam 21:8 "And David said unto Ahimelech, And is there not here under thine hand spear or sword? for I have neither brought my sword nor my weapons with me, because the king's business required haste."

Second step down hill David leaves Ahimelech, goes down to Gath of the Philistines because of fear and comes across Achish their king and when Achish asks what he is doing down there he fakes madness and changes his behavior and is held in complete disrespect of the Philistines Turn to 1 Sam 22.2

Third step in going down hill David and his men 1 Sam 22:2 "And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men." They will destroy you Prov 13:20 "He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed." They will lead you to shame your family Prov 28:7 "Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father." They will lead you to devour your living Luke 15:30 "But as soon as this thy son was come, which hath devoured thy living with harlots, thou hast killed for him the fatted calf." They are unexplainable to the Lord 2 Cor 6:14 "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?" 2 Cor 6:15 "And what concord hath Christ with Belial? or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel?" 2 Cor 6:16 "And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."

David and Nabal Skip down to 1 Sam 25.21 1 Sam 25:21 "Now David had said, Surely in vain have I kept all that this fellow hath in the wilderness, so that nothing was missed of all that pertained unto him: and he hath requited me evil for good." David is now giving in to fits of temper

David and his wives Skip down to 1 Sam 25.39 1 Sam 25:39 "And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, Blessed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the cause of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his servant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David sent and communed with Abigail, to take her to him to wife." Skip down to 1 Sam 1 Sam 25:43 "David also took Ahinoam of Jezreel; and they were also both of them his wives."

David goes back to the Philistines skip down to 1 Sam 27.1 1 Sam 27:1 "And David said in his heart, I shall now perish one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I should speedily escape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul shall despair of me, to seek me any more in any coast of Israel: so shall I escape out of his hand." 1 Sam 27:5 "And David said unto Achish, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in some town in the country, that I may dwell there: for why should thy servant dwell in the royal city with thee?" 1 Sam 27:6 "Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day." 1 Sam 27:7 "And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and four months." 1 Sam 27:8 "And David and his men went up, and invaded the Geshurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for those nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goest to Shur, even unto the land of Egypt." 1 Sam 27:9 "And David smote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the asses, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned, and came to Achish." 1 Sam 27:10 "And Achish said, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David said, Against the south of Judah, and against the south of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites." 1 Sam 27:11 "And David saved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, saying, Lest they should tell on us, saying, So did David, and so will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the Philistines." David is sliding further down hill 1 Sam 27:12 "And Achish believed David, saying, He hath made his people Israel utterly to abhor him; therefore he shall be my servant for ever." David's life keeps going down hill While all of this is going on Achish attempts to draw David into a battle with Israel. Samuel the Prophet has died and Saul is not getting any word from God. This is where he goes to the witch of Endor and that whole story Meanwhile David squirms out of fighting against Israel and goes back home to Ziklag to find that the Amalekites had come and raided the town, burned it down and hauled off everyone woman and child, and everything of value David is still going lower and lower, in a spiral of waywardness

Then all of a sudden in David's life we have a string of Victories and Accomplishments that are right on the heels of his backsliding, the lowest point in his life.

Eulogy of Saul and Jonathon David is Forgiving and Noble His enemy Saul is dead in the battle we just mentioned 2 Sam 1:17 "And David lamented with this lamentation over Saul and over Jonathan his son:" 2 Sam 1:18 "(Also he bade them teach the children of Judah the use of the bow: behold, it is written in the book of Jasher.)" 2 Sam 1:19 "The beauty of Israel is slain upon thy high places: how are the mighty fallen!" 2 Sam 1:20 "Tell it not in Gath, publish it not in the streets of Askelon; lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph." David is a changed man

Anointed in Hebron as King David had been anointed one time before But never came to his kingdom and now he does. David is a changed man What made the difference??? 2 Sam 2:4 "And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah and they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeshgilead were they that buried Saul." 2 Sam 2:5 "And David sent messengers unto the men of Jabeshgilead, and said unto them, Blessed be ye of the LORD, that ye have showed this kindness unto your lord, even unto Saul, and have buried him." 2 Sam 2:6 "And now the LORD show kindness and truth unto you: and I also will requite you this kindness, because ye have done this thing." David was a changed man What made the difference???

David made King 2 Sam 5:1 "Then came all the tribes of Israel to David unto Hebron, and spake, saying, Behold, we are thy bone and thy flesh." 2 Sam 5:2 "Also in time past, when Saul was king over us, thou wast he that leddest out and broughtest in Israel: and the LORD said to thee, Thou shalt feed my people Israel, and thou shalt be a captain over Israel." David is changed What made the difference??

Victory over the Philistines 2 Sam 5:22 "And the Philistines came up yet again, and spread themselves in the valley of Rephaim." 2 Sam 5:23 "And when David inquired of the LORD, he said, Thou shalt not go up; but fetch a compass behind them, and come upon them over against the mulberry trees." 2 Sam 5:24 "And let it be, when thou hearest the sound of a going in the tops of the mulberry trees, that then thou shalt bestir thyself: for then shall the LORD go out before thee, to smite the host of the Philistines." 2 Sam 5:25 "And David did so, as the LORD had commanded him; and smote the Philistines from Geba until thou come to Gazer." David is a changed man no longer running, no longer hiding in caves, no longer at the mercy of men like Nabal and Achish, no longer leading a band of rebels. Many of them became great men. Many of them became the finest in Israel, but only because … David was a changed man why did this happen??? Do any of us need to be changed??? It might be interesting to see how he did it.

Ark returned 2 Sam 6:15 "So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet." 2 Sam 6:16 "And as the ark of the LORD came into the city of David, Michal Saul's daughter looked through a window, and saw king David leaping and dancing before the LORD; and she despised him in her heart." 2 Sam 6:17 "And they brought in the ark of the LORD, and set it in his place, in the midst of the tabernacle that David had pitched for it: and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD." 2 Sam 6:18 "And as soon as David had made an end of offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the LORD of hosts." 2 Sam 6:19 "And he dealt among all the people, even among the whole multitude of Israel, as well to the women as men, to every one a cake of bread, and a good piece of flesh, and a flagon of wine. So all the people departed every one to his house." What a changed person

What made the difference? Remember the story of Ziklag turn back and watch in 1 Sam 30.6 1 Sam 30:6 "And David was greatly distressed; … for the people spake of stoning him, because the soul of all the people was grieved, every man for his sons and for his daughters: … …but David encouraged himself in the LORD his God." He did not slide further He encouraged himself in the Lord. He encouraged himself in what God can do. He encouraged himself in God's
* insight,
* power and
* deliverance. Heb 13:6 "So that we may boldly say, The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." "…the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." "…the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." "…the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." "…the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." "…the Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me." Shouldn't we be saying… "…if God be for us who can be against us?" God told Abraham "…fear not I am thy shield and thy exceeding great reward" Shouldn't be believe God when He says … "…greater is He that is in you than he that is in the world" Shouldn't we say? "…in God have I put my trust" Shouldn't we trust in God no matter what the circumstances Hab 3:17 "Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls:" Hab 3:18 "Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation." Shouldn't we encourage ourselves in the Lord David encouraged himself in the Lord his God David went to find the Amalekites who had taken their families And coming upon them in the evening, still celebrating their victory in Ziklag and he and the 400 men he had with them came down on them while they were … eating and drinking and dancing and fought with them all night and all the next day til it was dark. David and his men recovered their families and goods and came back to where we pickup in 1 Sam 30.21 1 Sam 30:21 "And David came to the two hundred men, which were so faint that they could not follow David, whom they had made also to abide at the brook Besor: and they went forth to meet David, and to meet the people that were with him: and when David came near to the people, he saluted them." 1 Sam 30:22 "Then answered all the wicked men and men of Belial, of those that went with David, and said, Because they went not with us, we will not give them ought of the spoil that we have recovered, save to every man his wife and his children, that they may lead them away, and depart." 1 Sam 30:23 "Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand." 1 Sam 30:24 "For who will hearken unto you in this matter? but as his part is that goeth down to the battle, so shall his part be that tarrieth by the stuff: they shall part alike." 1 Sam 30:25 "And it was so from that day forward, that he made it a statute and an ordinance for Israel unto this day." 1 Sam 30:26 "And when David came to Ziklag, he sent of the spoil unto the elders of Judah, even to his friends, saying, Behold a present for you of the spoil of the enemies of the LORD;" 1 Sam 30:27 "To them which were in Bethel, and to them which were in south Ramoth, and to them which were in Jattir," 1 Sam 30:28 "And to them which were in Aroer, and to them which were in Siphmoth, and to them which were in Eshtemoa," 1 Sam 30:29 "And to them which were in Rachal, and to them which were in the cities of the Jerahmeelites, and to them which were in the cities of the Kenites," 1 Sam 30:30 "And to them which were in Hormah, and to them which were in Chorashan, and to them which were in Athach," 1 Sam 30:31 "And to them which were in Hebron, and to all the places where David himself and his men were wont to haunt." David is a changed man because he encouraged himself in the Lord and not relying on the flesh Some of us just want to get close to encouraging ourselves in the Lord so we encourage ourselves in Churchy stuff or the things of this world but …. Heb 13:6 "The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me."
