Two exchange students
One from Holland One from Iceland were walking by the booth in Palestine
when the Holland girl looked over at the booth. I pointed to the sign she
stopped and smiled I pointed to the doors for her to come open them. She
turned and came back. As I was going through the doors the girl from Iceland
came back and listened. Before we finished the doors the lady they were
staying with came up and understood what I was doing and encouraged me and the
girls to continue. We struggled for a long time with the wording but they
finally saw it was by faith in Christ and not works. The girl from Holland was
able to testify of receiving Christ in English to several in the booth. The
girl from Iceland struggled with the words and could not.
Two exchange students Brazil
Two 18 or 19 year old students came by the booth in Yakima. There were about 6
of us in the booth and we all took a shot at trying to talk to them but could
not get them to understand salvation. The Lord then put it in my heart to grab
the Bridge Flip-Chart which gives a pretty good graphic presentation of the
Gospel and Salvation. I set them down and with broken Spanish on my part and
theirs and the Chart they both prayed and received Christ. One was able to
testiby in English to several in the booth of his salvation the other was not
able to put it in English. I wish now that I had asked him to say it in
Portuguese and then ask the first if he said it right.

He walked up to the booth looking at the 3 doors saying
“What is this?” in a doubting manner. We showed him behind the 3 doors and he
backed away then turned and left. Later he came back with Nick (a talker and
probably because of being a talker considered a leader). They both sat down
and made a profession of faith. Neither came to the booth to start with for
that purpose.

Was asked if he knew for sure that he was born again. He
said no but started repeating a lot of herasy he had obviously heard from
someone at a Pool Hall somewhere. First he was an agnostic then he believed in
some other god and so on. The whole time trying to get a rise out of us. We
only told him he could be saved and did not address his arguments because he
was not sincere. He came back by several times making comments to others how
he had sat down and argued with us. He did not sit down and we did not reply to
his ascertions. We planted the seed of salvation someone else will have to
water it so that God may give the increase in the future.

Erik came by the booth and was saved. He had made a profession at a local
church but had no assurance of salvation. We asked if he was saved. He said
they said I was. We asked what he did. He said he asked Jesus into his heart.
We asked if there had been a change in his heart that God had made not him. He
said he didn’t think so. We led him to the Lord to water the seed and see if
the Lord would give the increase. Only Erik and God knows if he got saved. The
next day he came walking by with a boy about the same age who was a little
mouthy. We asked Erik’s friend if he knew he was born again. He was trying to
dodge the question. Erik told him to listen to what we were saying. We told
him but if we could show him how he could know for sure if he was born again
not only would he like to see it but Erik would really like for him to see it.
Erik said yes I would really like for you to see it. The boy did not come
here the Gospel. But the point is this Erik seemed to have the right kind of
heart we do not think prior to making a profession of faith he was going
around urging his antognistic friends to hear the Gospel.

These 2 girls attended the First Baptist Church in but they did not
know if they were born again. Sometimes preachers never use the words born
again so we thought they could possibly be saved anyway. We asked if they were
saved. They said yes. We asked what they did to be saved. They said they
asked Jesus into their heart. We are always leary of that reply. We then asked
when you asked Jesus into your heart was there a change made that only God
could have made. They started to reply but we asked that they say nothing but
listen to 2 Cor 5.17 “If any man be in Christ he is a new creature (or
creation) old things are past away behold all things have become new.” We
asked if God had given them a new heart to want to do right. They may not
always do right but wanted to and convicted of God when they didn’t.” They
just sat there. We told them if they wanted that new heart and be born again
and know for sure they are saved to pray with us. They did.

She was a Catholic lady whose husband had died and came to the booth with her
son (44) and a male friend who had been saved. She wanted to know about being
born again. She listened carefully. Had a few questions. Cried when she
prayed. He son John was very leary and would not sit down at the table. But
by the time we had gone through the Gospel he said he needed to sit down. His
mother’s friend let him have his chair. By the time we got to the prayer he was
intent. We could see a total change on his face after the prayer. Jeanne was
still a little concerned about salvation but her son had no problems at all.
A perfect example of aiming at a deer and bagging a bear.

She and 4 other girls came to the booth. Elizabeth was the only one that did
not make a profession of faith because she would not acknowledge that she was
responsible for Jesus being on the cross. “It was not me!” was her objection.
All 4 of the other girls tried to tell convince her but she steadfastly refused
responsibility. Some may interject that we failed with Elizabeth but we submit
to you that the seed was planted deep by us and her newly professing friends and
that seed was watered from a large heavenly cistern.

Juan was with 5 teen girls. The young ladies sat down in the booth to hear what
it takes to be born again. Juan stood behind the scenes but not too far away
that he could not hear. The girls happily received Christ and their newly
created heart and left with some excitement. Juan told them he would catch up
later then sat down while Pat showed him how he too could be saved.
Juan was like the sailor who overheard the location of the buried treasure then
after the other mariners had left stayed on to receive the everlasting treasure
himself.

Aaron (19) and James (18) were working in the local Job Corps unit outside of
Yakima and where trying to earn a little money at the fair grounds during the
Central Washington State Fair. They came into the booth and readily heard the
Gospel possibly thinking that they could inquire of something they had only
heard small tidbits about in the past and now under cloak of animinity could see
what it is all about. Even though their homes were thousands of miles from
central Washington; and they were working at obsure jobs; and no one in the
whole county knew their names God had not lost track of them and had steered
them to our booth stirred their interest and stacked enough grace on their
hearts for them “to become the sons of God even to them that believe on His
name”.

I was read excerpts from the Bible about being saved from
sin. I learned I had to call upon Jesus as my Saviour for forgiveness. I
prayed and asked for forgiveness.

It had been unusually slow for a Saturday evening. We had plenty of help in the
soul winning booth but not many to talk to for the last 1 ½ hours. Then in the
last 30 minutes of the night we had 10 come in the booth all at once. Pat had a
mother 3 daughters and a son (7) sit down to hear the Gospel. We always ask
our prospects to fill-out a decision slip after they have prayed to be saved.
Then we ask them to write on the back of the slip “What just happened to
you?”. One of the daughters asked the son what he wanted to write on the back
of his slip. He said “I’m so happy I could cry”. The mother said as she left
“That was the most beautiful way to explain the Gospel”. All 5 had made a
profession of faith.

Jim and Sallie were not together but walked up at the same time.
Jim went through the 3 doors and wanted to know for sure about being born
again. We showed him. Jim said “You showed me the same thing last year. You
picked me out of the crowd of kids to tell me about being born again.”
He still was not sure of salvation. We showed him 2 Cor 5.17. The evidence of
a God-changed heart is proof of salvation.
Then Sallie spoke up “I am a perfect example. I used to do drugs sleep around
and so on but then I was saved and now I am a changed person. Next year I’m
going to a Baptist College.
I don’t know if her testimony was convincing to Jim but it was timely and to
the point. If he remembered the incident last year I know he will never forget
what happened at the fair this year.

She came by and started to visit while it was generally
slow. She asked where we were from and what we were doing and so on. She said
“I could not believe what I saw a few minutes ago. You had 3 sitting at your
table and she had 2 at the other table.” She said she was praying for us.
We are looking for the lost but we are also looking to
encourage the saints. Encourage them to pray to encourage us and to also win
the lost. It is easy to see the lost and backslidden want to know about Christ.

we were doing and encouraged Pat to talk to the boy. She said the grandson did
not go to church except when he was with the grandparents.
Frequently grandparents will bring their grandchildren by the booth just to get
another perspective for the children. Lost people must hear the Gospel from
different people at different times so the Spirit of God has opportunity to
drive the seed of the word down deep.

This young girl came by several times acting like she

Barney a soul winner was telling this boy that we do not
always know when we may die. The boy agreed and related a story which occurred
about 2-3 months ago. He started a farm tractor but it was in gear lunging
backward killing his father’s hired hand.
We were sure that knowledge of forgiveness was good news to
him.
Where else but a public event …
can a person be won and they can be an instant Andrew by leaving the booth and
finding a brother or sister or friend and bringing them back to be saved also?
Is it important to be at an event year after year?
We have seen people come to the booth trusting we would be
there to talk to their friend they had in tow. We think it is important.

Barney just 18 himself had just prayed with this young man when we entered the
booth. He was getting up and said with joy in his tone “I just got saved.
This is the best day of my life.” We took a picture of Barney and the recent
convert. You didn’t have to ask which was which. Barney was smiling but not
from ear to ear with every tooth in his head showing nor was Barney holding his
new Bible up close to his heart.

Pat asked me for a brochure from the local church we were working with and as I
walked over to hand it to her Carla turned and looked at me with a big smile
saying “I was just saved.” It took her about 20 minutes to leave. Everytime
she started to turn and walk away she would think of something else to ask
about or mention. Before she left she gave Pat a big hug and we took their
picture.

came up behind her and attempted to say something clever to impress her (having
no idea what just took place.) Rene turned around and said “I just got saved
I’m born-again.”
The young man was obviously shocked paused for what seemed
like an hour to the rest of us then picked up where he left off in then
previously meaningless drivel. He could tell she wasn’t impressedand moved on.
We were elated.
Pat told her how proud she was in her immediate boldness
for what happened to her. Rene came right back with a very profound statement
“If you don’t tell people what has happened it would be because you are
ashamed.”

friend at the fair. We are presently working on getting his friend to come with

to see her and she said they had planned on coming but overslept. (Your wife led
Mary to the Lord.) David & Laree have been to church the last two Sundays.
They are the people I met on Sunday when we were getting ready to leave. So far

We give everyone passing by a tract. The one we like to use is a booklet which
is only 2”x2 ½” but has 28 pages (14 leafs). People readily retain it because
it has the look and feel of a book rather than a flyer.
While dealing with Ruby and most everyone else we draw out a diagram of the
plan of salvation on a 3’x5’ card so they can easily see what God has done for
them and how their faith should interact. When Ruby got up to leave she
pointed to the tract and said “Does this say all of that (3”x5” card)?”
Many who hear the plan of salvation want to take the 3”x5” card whether they
are saved or not. They want to have something graphic. Something they can see
not just hear or read abstract words.

(nodding to his wife). We sat him down and he readily “Gave myself to God.”
We like to use this type of wording when dealing with 2 or more people and at
least one is already saved. It really softens the intensity of the moment. We
also let them know that their saved friend or spouse would be glad to sit with
them and listen to see if we tell it correctly. A much smaller percentage turn
us down using this method.

“No”. She began to tell them the plan of salvation. Since both counseling
tables were being used Pat had to show them as they stood up front. They seemed
a little selfconscious about being shown something from the Bible. When it got
down to praying she asked if they wanted to. They looked at each other. Pat
told them don’t look to the other for help it has to be from your own heart.

that he did. In some cities this happens a lot more than others. It may be
because the churches that are preaching savlvation do not preach eternal life.
Also many people do get saved but do not get involved in a church and quickly
lose track of what was said and what happened. I like to compare this to when
we were in school and had to take Algebra. The teacher would write out on the
board how to solve these math problems and at the time it would make perfect
sense but as we tried to solve our Algebra homework we would forget or lose
track of the logic or flow of the problems.
But the next day we went back to class and listened again
asked questions and then the situations would clear-up.
This is the same way with assurance of salvation. When
people quit hearing how it works they lose track of what was said and what
happened.
Also the explanations they received to strart with may
have made perfect sense to the one doing the explaining but the listeners
missed it or the explanation seemed to have holes in it or did not come from
the Bible.
Why are we saying all this? Be patient! Take the time to
restore. Sometimes in our attempts to restore we find they were never saved
from the start.

Too often mankind wants to be sold on something rather than listen with the
heart. We never attempt to persuade people to make a factual or logical
decision but we present the Gospel and let it do its work in the hearer’s
heart.

This is an excellent example of someone who wanted to pray

Later he came back by the booth with parents and siblings and introduced them

Doris said she thought she lost it. We dealt with that. Before she left we
asked if she was 50% - 75% - 100% that she was going to Heaven? She said 100%.
The whole ordeal took less than 3-4 minutes but she got decades of joy.
We also introduced her to the local pastor who was helping in the booth and they
were able to initiate a helpful conversation.

Kellie was 26 years old and with her mother and daughter (3
generations). They came up to the booth and we asked if they have seen the 3
things God CANNOT Do? After seeing the last door "God CANNOT let us into
heaven unless we are Born Again" we asked if they knew for sure that they were
Born Again. The mother said "Yes" but Kellie said that she was not. We
asked "But if we could show you what it takes to be Born Again you sure would
like to see it wouldn't you?"
Kellie kind of balked but her mother encouraged her to
just see it.
Of course we showed it to her and asked if she wanted to be
Saved or Born Again. She was a lot more cooperative now.
After she prayed she cried for a few minutes then wrote
on the back of her Decision Card "I finally let Jesus in my heart."
The mother said "For a long time now I have been trying
to figure a way for Kellie to be saved. I have been asking God to do
something."
We told her in a kind manner (not to preach to her) that
the Lord has been wanting Kellie saved a lot more than all of us put together
but has needed us to step forward and do something. You (the mother) just
encouraged her to come to this booth and sit down and listen and the Lord did
the saving.
We have got to preach and pray but when we are not lets
lead someone to a place of salvation.

How the Lord got all of us together in a huge crowd in
downtown to get Marco to hear how to be saved is a mystery to

Norma sat and listened to Pastor Martin’s wife with much
enthusiasm. She gladly said that she had been saved. Since she did not have a
Bible one will be delivered to her. This is a great opportunity to talk to her
again.
Since the seed is apt to fall into stony places she might
hear the word and at the time receive it with joy. But being in rocky ground
does not have root and when tribulation or persecution comes she might be
offended. Or she may be living amongst the thorns. Then when the cares of this
world or love of money chokes the word becomes unfruitful.
Going by again is very needful to help “babes in Christ”
along the strait and narrow.
We also like to ask if the prospect goes to a church. Not
to give credence to that church but to say in a caring way “I wonder why your
church has never told you how to be saved? To be saved and begin a life for
Christ is the most important reason for going to church.”
Never speak sarcasticly or to demean a person’s church
thereby making them defensive. Plenty can be said without sounding like a
critical-cult or a condescending Christian.
In this case Norma was very glad to hear that someone
would bring her a Bible and a church service schedule.

uplifted by the incident and encouraged to talk to the next person.

supports us gave us several dozen to use in the booth why?”
Jesse said “Both of us are from Angelton Irene’s father

Well from that point on we had their undivided
attention. We don’t think that they thought anyone in even knew
where Angelton was or if such a place existed.
The Lord knew exactly what this couple needed to get their
minds on the right track.

his old Sargent looking as something in another booth. He hurried over and
renewed an acquaintance that had been dormant for 3 years. He had just told the
Pastor he wanted to go by and see this man to see if he was still in town.
They walked off together and visited. When they came back
he told his friend he wanted to show him the booth his church had at the
festival. As they walked over he also told him that it was about being saved
and he wanted to show that to him as well. The young man agreed was shown and
made a profession of faith in Christ.

someone to talk to him. We asked if he was waiting on someone. He said no and
started looking through his billfold and mumbling something.
We asked if he knew for sure if he was going to heaven. He
said he was saved last year at the booth but since then he had lost it while
still fumbling through his billfold.
We sat him down and showed him from the Bible that he could
not lose his salvation.
Finally he found what he was looking for in his billfold.
It was the Birth Certificate from last year. It was torn in 3 pieces but pretty
much in tact.
We then introduced him to some men in the booth from the
local church and encourage him to get started again in church to grow and learn
how to handle the problems of the world.
When he left he still was very concerned but a little
more confident.
Thank the Lord we were at the same spot the next year so he
would know where to find help.

Luis went through the doors and wanted to know about being born again. We told
him to ask his parents if we could show it to him. He came back and said he
could not find them. We sent him again. He came back and said his older
brother said it was alright.
He sat with Pat and was saved. He really caught on fire. In about an hour he
came back pulling his mother by the arm saying "Read this Read this Read
this" pointing to the doors. He was smiling and talking as fast as he could
telling us "Show it to her show it to her." Then he would talk to his parents
in Spanish.
His mother did not know what was going on. We explained that Pat had shown Luis
the Gospel and he was saved. But she was still puzzled.
We asked if she would like to see what it takes to be saved or born again and
she paused. Luis told her "Come sit down sit down". Diana Luis' mother
finally sat but the father wouldn't. He wanted to stand. They then had this
lengthily conversation in Spanish and all laughed and the father sat down.
Steve showed the mother how to be saved and prayed with her for her to ask the
Lord to save her. He then told her that if she meant her prayer that she was
saved. If not then she was not saved.
Steve asked her if she was wondering how she could know if she had meant the
prayer or not. Diana affirmed.
Steve told her that when a person is born again they become a new person in
their heart "If any man is in Christ he is a new creature." Then he pointed
to Luis. When Luis was saved he became a new person that both of them could
plainly see. It was a change that God made. As God changes her new heart she
will know for certain that she meant her prayer.

Saturday night things were getting a little wild so we decided to shut down
and get a fresh start on Sunday afternoon. As we were wrapping up a local
policeman came up and asked: "You are not going to leave just when we need
you?"

At the Fiesta the 2 men from whom we rent the
booth space came by and talked a while. Dean asked Slim "Why don't you quit
trying to deal with all these people selling their junk and just rent to about
25 local churches like these guys?" Slim said "I would but none of them want
to rent a space. They all want you to give it to them."
These men are probably not saved but they easily
recognized what the churches are doing and where their intentions lie.
They came back at the end of the Festival and asked if
everything went all right and did we need any thing to be done different.
Of course they did the same thing for all the other rentees
showing that if you pay your own way keep you nose clean you will be treated
as fairly as anyone else.

Does it not seem strange that a saved mother would walk off
and leave her daughter to hear the Gospel with some strange children and from a
strange man? We are not saying the mother is not saved but it seems that
something is missing. This happens frequently when a parent sees a son or
daughter at one of our counseling tables and enquires.

encourage their child to sit and hear the Gospel and sit with them.

While speaking to a Prospect.
As a young person walked up to the booth we asked if he
had seen the 3 things God cannot do? At the same moment a middle aged lady was
walking by and heard what was said and stopped to see what was behind the
doors. After showing the young man that God could not Lie could not Change and
could not let anyone into heaven unless born again the lady was about to walk
off when we asked the young man do you know for sure you are born again. She
stopped to hear the young man's reaction. He said no I don't know for sure.
We replied but if we could show you how you could know you sure would like to
see it wouldn't you? The lady was not in lock-stance to see what the young man
was going to do now. He said yeah. We said sure come hear we'll show it
to you as we wheeled around and waved him into the booth. The lady was
shocked just as most people are when they see how simple it is to 1. Greet
prospects 2. Discover their eternal destination and 3. Seat them in front of
an open Bible.
When working with churches we have members wait for a
prospect who wants to see what it takes to be born again then we pass them to
the member.
Isn't this a simple process to help train members in soul
winning?

Juan said that he did not believe in God. He did not seem
earnest in his denial and we pursued him. We told him that we would not attempt
to prove God but would like to show what God can do for him.
He and his 2 sons sat down and heard a thorough witness.
Upon completion we asked if he wanted to ask Jesus to save him. We prayed.
Then told him that if he meant his prayer he was saved if he did not he was
not saved. He could know if he meant the prayer if he got the changed heart 2
Cor 5:17. The changed heart was identified frequently by a desire to tell
others "I have been saved forgiven on my way to heaven." Even think that he
would like to tell others how to be saved if he could.
He still was not sure if he got the change.
We told him how long we would be there and to come back if
he had questions or just wanted to talk.
Juan and his son left in good spirits.
In less than 20 minutes Juan came back and said he must
have gotten the change because he feels completely different. "I can't stop
smiling".
He wanted to shake our hand again and thanked us profusely.
