Answers to Evangelism Questions

Where Is the Biblical Basis for a Public Ministry?

Acts 20:20  "…and have taught you publicly, and from house to house,"

The "house to house" part is well known to soul winning churches, but the use of public places is widely ignored.

Acts 18:28  "For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, showing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ."

"Publicly" in this instance, probably denotes speaking up in the synagogues.  But His whole ministry, outside the synagogues was in public places where people were apt to gather.  True, Jesus was His own "featured event" and people came to Him.  But, we lesser mortals, can use the draw of public spectacles, to contact many for the Saviour.

Acts 17:17  "Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily…" and through verse 34

The apostles used the public markets probably because the crowds came to them and they could speak to many more people on a one on one basis in a shorter period of time.

Acts 13:49 "And the word of the Lord was published throughout all the region."
Luke 8:39 "Return to thine own house, and shew how great things God hath done unto thee. And he went his way, and published throughout the whole city how great things Jesus had done unto him."
Mark 5:20 "And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel."

Because of lack of imagination, many have assigned these types of "publishings" as preaching sermons.  Undoubtedly there must have been some preaching, but just as evident these same people would have used these occasions to speak one on one while the crowd was still present.  More are won and warned on a face to face basis than sermonizing.

Acts 16:13 "And on the sabbath we went out of the city by a river side, where prayer was wont to be made; and we sat down, and spake unto the women which resorted thither."

Paul went were people were apt to resort.  Sat down with them and, as the narrative relates, won souls to Jesus.

John 4

Jesus with the woman at the public well is a perfect example of public ministry.  He sat down at the well and waited for the people to come to Him.  The woman later went into the city, not preaching a sermon, but talking to others gathered in the streets for commerce reasons.
