Promises for the Pilgrim

"For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;"  1 Tim 2:5

Allow us to make a comment about this month's Promise for the Pilgrim.  The principle in the above verse covers one of the most pervasive errors amongst America's population.  They commonly feel there is another mediator between them and the Father.  All kinds of mediators are suggested.  Some feel their church is able to get them to heaven or their pastor or priest or parents or heritage (especially prevalent amongst Jews).  Some even think that we in the booth may be able to do something for them and ask us to pray to the Father for them.  Of course, we pray for the lost, but not in the place of Christ, the Mediator.

Hello from the Highways

Thank you for receiving and reading this letter.  Thanks, too for your confidence in this ministry and your prayerful and financial support.  A big THANKS, too, for you that have called or written to be an enormous encouragement.

2006 is off to a good start.  We have many new events to manage this year.  Some of you have asked Pat and me, "What do you do when you are not working an event?"  You would not believe the amount of work that must be performed to keep things going.

Travel time, from event to church to event again.  You see, we feel it is imperative for us to work with fundamental churches, therefore we have to contact them (many, many calls just to get someone to answer; you know how it is when you try to call your church), attempt to obtain a meeting to present the ministry, travel to the church, gain interest in doing a local event and then making calls to discover what events are available in their area and will still fit our schedule.  We also, must make calls to enquire about events for some of our helpers, and then send them materials and tracts for those events.  There were 12 churches last year who worked events in our stead.  They also must have tracts and materials and some need scheduling, etc.

There are also events, which we do not want to work again, because they were too small or they occur at a bad time and so on.  We then must replace some of them with events that fit all the criteria.  Some must be kept, but still have scheduling clashes, we then must attempt to find someone to cover for us.  The mission has 130 missionaries doing a great work, but they all have their own schedules, so we try not to be disruptive to them by asking for help.

Try these for soaking-up time. Every week we are in a different city. Where is Wal-Mart? … grocery store? … post office? … hardware store? … hair cut? … CLEAN Laundromat? … diesel? … library (to check email)? … dollar store? And so on.  Remember, we are not talking about the best or cheapest place, but maybe the ONLY place? And it is not enough to get directions, they must be good directions! What about banking by mail? Driving 25K+ miles per year with a travel trailer?

We could go on and on, but I am beginning to sound like a whiner or complainer, compared to your problems.  This is the work the Lord has allowed us to do and we are honored to do it.  But all of it takes time and "time waits for no one".  While taking your short cut to Wal-Mart, pray for us, because you know we are on the wrong street, heading in the wrong direction.

Words for Soul Winners and Warners

"We have been praying for her for years"

While helping us witness to the lost in a booth at a 10 day fair, a lady told us that the girl approaching was a friend of her daughter's and they have been praying for her to be saved for years.  The girl and her boy friend came up.  We went through our routine (you who read this letter regularly know the routine better than we do) and asked if they knew for sure if they were born again.  Both said no.  We seated them in front of an open Bible and told them succinctly and thoroughly.  After they prayed with us, we told the girl to go tell the lady working with us, what happened.  She did, and there was lots of hugging and crying and laughing and so on.

Here is why I bring this story up.  This young lady had heard many times that she should be saved.  But at a public booth, many people have open hearts.  They come to see a sight or experience something different.  They are open.  We simply put the gospel in that heart while the door was open.

This is a huge opportunity.  Do not miss it for your community.  Do not let your community miss what only you can give it.  True the Lord must do the saving, but He is depending on you to go and use your lips, feet and hands to take His message.

What Are the Odds?

While pastoring in Post Falls, ID, it was necessary for me to go see one of church ladies who worked in a local business.  A faithful man in the church and I went to the business and waited for Cindi to finish with a customer.  After we talked for a minute, Cindi said there was a lady who worked with her who wanted to meet me.  I had no idea why.

After introductions, she told me that her father receives my poems by email in California (with the help of a wonderful friend, Jon Dekeles, we had sent our poems out once a week for years: PoemOfTheWeek.com).  The poem had a nautical ring to it and her father was a retired sailor and enjoyed it very much.  When she decided to move to Post Falls, ID, he told her to tell me thanks.  Only God knows the world wide trail of those many poems and the 1241.3 mile return trip to send a word of encouragement to a not-so-good poet.  Of course, we were able to hit a few licks for the Lord in this person's life.

What are the Odds?  Excellent! when the Lord aligns His spiritual appointments to get a word placed.

When Sending Support

Please mail to Heritage Baptist Church, PO Box 2213, Post Falls, ID, 83877.  Do not write our name on the check, indicate on a separate slip, for whom it is intended.  Pastor Haveman personally handles the mission accounts.  We are not fully supported, but fully active from Jan. through Dec.  Fairs, Festivals, Flea Markets, Parades are a great encouragement to Churches to reach communities with the Gospel.
